How to shortlist local trades without wasting a Saturday

A practical way to compare builders, electricians, plumbers and other local trades in New Zealand: start with live directory supply, check claimed profiles, then message with suburb and scope.

You do not need a spreadsheet with twenty names. You need three good options, a clear brief, and enough detail to tell who can actually help this week.

Start with live supply, not a random Google scroll

Open the category that matches the job. On Business Directory NZ that means pages like builders, electricians, plumbers or painters. Then narrow to your region: the category × region page shows who is listed there right now, with contact details on each card.
If you already know the council area, jump straight in. Builders in Auckland and electricians in Canterbury are typical starting points. For a wider view of where supply sits nationwide, the insights page ranks categories and regions from live counts.

Read the listing before you call

On each profile, check four things quickly:
  • Service area. A Wellington listing that only covers the Hutt is not a fit for Kapiti.
  • Claimed or not. Claimed profiles are more likely to have current hours and a real reply path.
  • What they say they do. “Renovations and decks” is more useful than “quality workmanship”.
  • How to contact them. Prefer a listing that offers message and phone, so you are not stuck if one channel is quiet.

Keep the shortlist short

Save two or three. More than that and you will spend the afternoon repeating yourself. If two look similar, pick the closer suburb or the clearer service list. Distance still matters for trades: travel time shows up in quotes whether anyone says it out loud.

Send one clear first message

A short note beats a long story. Include:
  • Suburb or town
  • What the job is (one sentence)
  • Rough timing (this week, next month, flexible)
  • Any constraint that matters (rental, LBP restricted work, access issues)
Example: “Hi, we need a sparky for a heat-pump circuit in Riccarton, ideally in the next fortnight. Are you available for a site look?” That filters people who cannot help you without a five-call chase.

When to walk away

No clear service area, no way to contact them, or a reply that dodges price and timing are all useful signals. You are not being difficult. You are hiring someone into your home or workplace.
If you are the tradesperson on the other side of this, claim your listing and keep the suburb list honest. Customers shortlist faster when the profile answers the obvious questions first.
