Autobahn Grey Lynn was rebranded Autobahn Mechanics in 2019 as part of its growth plans toward expanding operations and service locations throughout the whole of New Zealand. Once the location of Wootton Motors mechanic shop by the Wotton family opened in 1915, Autobahn Mechanics operated out of a location with a unique history.
Aside from its longtime association with mechanic shops, the property once housed a copper wash basin where residents of the local community came to wash and prepare their crayfish and catch of the day, courtesy of the Western Springs and Cox Bay waters. Added to its mechanic responsibilities, Wootton Motors was also a service vendor to the trams that once traverse Aucklands CBD and nearby suburbs like Grey Lynn, Newmarket, Epsom and others.
The site and shop was renamed Autobahn Grey Lynn under a different in the early ’90s when Yellow Pages was the search engine for all businesses before the age of the internet; Grey Lynn helped customers identify the location of the shop, whereas autobahn was chosen purely for listing purpose; i.e. autobahn, beginning with the letter a, positioned the company name near the top of the Yellow Page-listing for automotive shops. The word autobahn also refers to a series of express motorways in and around Germany. An advertent link to transportation modes of all types.
