Our journey honours the remarkable history of Fiordland Souvenirs and the visionary individuals who brought Paua artistry in New Zealand to life. The Early Days: Mac McCabe and Fiordland Souvenirs In the 1950s, Anthony John (Mac) McCabe relocated his family to Stewart Island, drawn by the abundant Paua resources. Mac, known as "The Old Boy" to his family and staff, pioneered Paua diving using the traditional "hooker system" with its heavy helmet gear. At that time, Paua meat export was not yet a developed industry, but Mac saw potential in the shells' unique beauty. In 1964, Mac established Fiordland Souvenirs in Riverton. By the late 1970s, as New Zealand's tourism industry grew, the business flourished, employing 20-25 staff at its factory. Fiordland Souvenirs became one of the world's longest-standing manufacturers of Paua shell products, known for exceptional craftsmanship and innovation.
