Mechanics in New Zealand

Mechanics keep cars, vans and utes on the road. Day to day they carry out servicing, Warrant of Fitness checks, brake and clutch repairs, cambelt replacements and diagnostics for warning lights. Some specialise in particular makes while others handle anything that rolls in. Most drivers visit one once or twice a year, more often as a vehicle ages.

There is no single licence to be a mechanic in New Zealand, so other signals matter. Membership of the Motor Trade Association (MTA) points to set standards and a complaints process if something goes wrong. Ask whether they are an approved WoF inspector, request a written quote before authorising work and check if a courtesy car is available. A workshop that explains repairs in plain terms and keeps your old parts is usually a safe bet.
