The work ranges from full statutory audits through to lighter reviews, depending on the size of the entity and what the law requires.

Use a qualified professional. Members of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand who hold a certificate of public practice are bound by professional and independence standards, and some audits must be done by a licensed auditor. Ask about their experience with your type of entity, their fee basis and timing, since audits cluster after balance date. Independence is the point of an audit, so your auditor should not also prepare the accounts they sign off. A clear engagement letter setting scope and fees is a good sign.
