Bookkeepers in New Zealand

Bookkeepers manage the regular paperwork that keeps a business running: invoicing, bank reconciliation, accounts payable, payroll and GST returns. They work month to month rather than just at year-end, which is the main thing separating them from accountants. Many small firms use a bookkeeper for the day-to-day and an accountant for the annual tax work.

Look for Xero or MYOB certification and membership of the Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers (ICNZB), which requires proof of competence. Ask about payroll experience if you have staff, since PAYE and KiwiSaver get handled here. Bookkeepers usually charge a monthly retainer or an hourly rate, often less than an accountant.
